Abuse is usually a sliding scale. They don't come out (verbally) swinging from the get-go or we wouldn't put up with the situation. They wait until we feel safe or comfortable before beginning to show their true colors. And sometimes it happens so gradually—the proverbial frog in water that is brought up to boiling—that we don't realize what we're dealing with is actually abuse.
