My partner was abused by his ex wife (all the things that you said apply). And when he once threatened to call the cops, she laughed and taunted him and told him that she'd claim that he hurt her: "After all, who do you think they'll believe, you, at over 6 feet tall...or little ole me?" He retreated to his bedroom and locked the door which she pounded on screaming for 20 minutes before giving up...and he waited 2 days for her to leave the house to go to work before he came out of the room and started making plans to get out.

One sided belief and bias is a real thing.
